Most Participation in the Muğla 4th Olive Oil Quality Competition is from Milas, Most Prizes from Milas

While the highest number of participants in the Olive Oil Quality Competition, which was held for the fourth time this year in Muğla, was from Milas, olive oil producers from Milas received the most awards. In the competition where 134 companies or brands from 10 districts of Muğla participated, 60 companies or brands from Milas participated in the competition.

The Olive Oil Quality Competition Award Ceremony, organized for the 4th time this year by Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, was held at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, 15 July Martyrs’ Hall. The ceremony started with a fashion show where olive-themed clothes designed and prepared by Muğla Maturation Institute were presented. Then, an introductory film was shown in which the process of the Olive Oil Quality Competition, which was organized for the first time in 2019 by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, was explained. Pharmacist Atilla Totoş from the Zeytindostu Association, a member of the olive oil evaluation committee, explained that the olive oils that came to the competition were initially brought in plastic bottles and water bottles, but now they are brought to the competition in very special and high quality bottles. Totoş stated that it has made great progress in a very short time and expressed its admiration for the quality achieved in a short time. Emphasizing the importance of polyphenol values in olive oil production, Atilla Totoş said, “The polyphenol values of olive oil produced in Turkey are higher than other countries. Muğla is the center of olive oil production in Turkey.

Assoc. Dr. İbrahim Kıvrak stated that the polyphenol values of all olive oils that came to the competition were very high and said, “We even saw that the polyphenol values of olive oils with high acid value were high”.

Muğla Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Barış Saylak emphasized in his speech that there has been an increasing participation in the Olive Oil Quality Contest since 2019, “There were 77 applications in 2019. At the point we have reached today, 134 producers from 10 districts participated in this competition. Milas took the lead this year with 60 competitors. We hope to increase this number to 200 with the participation of our other districts next year. Among those who join this year, 39 of the 59 brands emerged in the last 4 years. This is very important in terms of seeing the distance we have come,” he said. In his speech, Saylak stated that Muğla is a tourism city with world-famous brand cities and said, “If tourism is our flagship, it is agriculture above it.” Explaining that nearly 50 thousand tons of the 450 thousand tons of olive oil produced in Turkey is produced by Muğla, Saylık said, “Our olive and olive oil producers in Milas, which have received EU registration, the Chamber of Agriculture and of course the Milas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which has been supporting us for 4 years, is a very valuable chairman and management team. Board members have a great share in this success.”

Reşit Özer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Milas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who made a speech at the ceremony, explained that after receiving the geographical indication registration for Milas olive oil from the EU, now Milas oil olives are in the process of EU geographical indication and said, “We obtain geographical indication for Milas oil olives from the EU. The 3-month suspension period continues. In August, we will get EU geographical indication for Milas oil olives. My goal is too big. I believe that we will achieve very important things with the Milas brand.”

Later in the ceremony, Muğla Commodity Exchange Chairman Hurşit Öztürk, AK Party Muğla Deputy and Parliamentary Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Committee Member Yakup Otgöz, AK Party Muğla Deputy and Parliamentary Environment Committee Member Kadem Mete, Muğla Deputy Governor Mehmet Eriş and “Zeytin Baba” in Turkey. Known as “Prof. Drl Mücahit Taha Özkaya gave speeches.

After the speeches, certificates of achievement and awards were given to the participants and award winners. In the competition, 8 olive oil producers were awarded the Premium / Special Jury Award, 10 olive oil producers were awarded the Polyphenol Award, 34 olive oil producers were awarded gold, 19 olive oil producers were given silver and 9 olive oil producers were awarded bronze. With the drawing held after the award ceremony, 11 producers won olive shakers, 5 producers 250 ml olive oil tanks, 1 producer 250 ml pulavrizator and 20 producers won gift packages.
